From 1 July the reduced energy price cap means that electricity in most UK homes is capped at 22.36p/kWh (or £1568 per year) which is £122 per year lower than the price cap set from 1 April to 30 June 2024.
This means that you will be paying over 60% less than the cost of fuelling a petrol or diesel car if you are charging your car from a source that costs 22.36p/kWh. Most EV owners are able to charge much more cheaply at home on an EV or night-time tariff, making the savings even greater.
If your motor is a Peugeot 208 1.2L petrol and you do 8,000 miles/year you will love the Peugeot e-208, with 134bhp! The benefits of switching would be:
- £758 a year saving on fuel (even greater if you are able to charge more cheaply than 22.36p/kWh or if the cost of petrol increases)
- Servicing is considerably cheaper because there is no engine oil, timing belt, water pump, spark plugs, fuel filters or exhaust systems. Brake pads last longer too because the car uses regen braking to slow down. And the service interval is every 2 years.
- No road tax to pay until April 2025 (and then at the standard rate which is currently £190/year)
- Great range of around 180 realworld miles and so it wouldn’t need charging every day
- 5 seconds quicker 0-62mph than the petrol model (8.2 seconds versus 13.2!)
Like all electric cars, the driving experience is superb with instant acceleration. The cost of a pre-owned Peugeot e-208 is around £220/month on a PCP (depending on your deposit, finance terms and the model you go for) or £15k cash purchase. If you need something bigger – for example you drive an estate – the Skoda Enyaq or VW ID.4 would be ideal replacements. Or if it is tech and performance that is important, it is hard to beat the Polestar 2. Or maybe you are looking for something really new or really iconic: check out the Renault Megane e-Tech or the BMW i3S!
